On the day of the incident, he was alone in the apartment, yelling threats that he would stab and kill people. When officers opened the door, they found him holding a knife. After numerous attempts to talk to Grenon, officers entered the apartment. They found him hiding in the shower with the knives still in his hands. They fired PepperBalls over his head in an attempt to force him out of the bathroom. It didn't work. They pushed back the shower curtain with a broom and Officer Durwin Ellerman fired both cartridges of his Taser. Grenon screamed and bent over, but then appeared to pull a Taser dart out of his body. Then he stepped out of the shower and ran toward the officers, swinging a knife. They tried to get out of his way. Officer Chase Vivori fired both of his Taser cartridges. He told investigators they were jast as ineffective as the previous ones. But there was not much time to tell, because a moment later, Officer Bowers shot and killed Grenon. Peter Gaines was having a mental health crisis – and a Taser may have made it worse.
A Houston Police Department officer, referred to in documents only as K. Levi, came across Gaines on his evening patrol on March 12, 2016. Gaines was experiencing what Levi thought was a “mental health crisis.” Gaines was trying to rip a street sign from a traffic light and started pacing back and forth while shouting “F--- this life” repeatedly.
Gaines then turned and approached Levi, clenching his fists and yelling “F--- this life.” Levi shouted at Gaines to stop and asked how he could help. But Gaines didn't respond, and the officer fired a Taser. He believed at least one dart struck Gaines, but it had no effect. Levi kept backing away and fired a second set of darts from his Taser X2. Gaines jolted for a moment, but otherwise it had no effect.
A witness, Gregory Raleigh, said he saw Gaines chasing the police officer with taser wires hanging off of him. Raleigh told the Houston Police Department that the Taser shock appeared to make Gaines even angrier. “The man was running like he was a madman,” he told APM Reports.
When he was 3 feet away from Levi, Gaines raised his fists. Gaines was unarmed, but the officer later said he feared for his safety and shot Gaines twice. The autopsy found one Taser dart with the wire still attached lodged into the front pocket of Gaines' jeans, but no dart punctures on Gaines' body.

Before they tased and shot him, the police had tried to help Michael Noel. On December 21, 2015, Noel's mother requested that officers in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, take her son to the hospital. She said he was “not taking his meds ... talks constantly, hearing voices [and] talking to people that don't exist,” according to court records. Noel, who had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, refused his mother's request to go to the hospital. So she called the police and obtained what's called an order of protective custody. It wasn't the first time she'd done so.
St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Sergeant Pittard Chapman and Deputy Dylan Laneaux arrived at Noel's house and tried to restrain him with handcuffs, but Noel resisted. Laneaux slapped one handcuff on Noel's right wrist, but Noel broke free and began flailing his arms. Chapman drew and fired his Taser. The darts struck Noel in the right upper arm, but “inexplicably, it had no effect on him,” according to a state police investigation of the incident.
Chapman pushed Noel onto the couch and tried, unsuccessfully, to restrain Noel's other arm. He then backed up and shocked Noel again by re-energizing the taser prongs that were still in Noel's arm. This also had no effect, and Noel pulled out the wires.
Laneaux then fired his Taser, hitting Noel in the right arm, but that too had no effect.
Noel moved toward the officers and began swinging the loose handcuff at them. They struggled, and at one point Noel reached for Laneaux's gun. Noel then hit Chapman in the mouth with the handcuff. Chapman backed away, grabbed his gun and fired two shots, striking Noel in the left arm and the chest. He died at the scene.
The autopsy found three Taser probes still attached to Noel's body. The local district attorney found the shooting justified.

Tasers could have saved Cornelius Brown, if only they had worked the way the police hoped.
Brown was shirtless and holding what looked like a broom handle when he walked into a Kwik Stop convenience store in Opa-locka, Florida, around 3 a.m. on November 18, 2015. Opa-locka police officer Daniel Kelly was parked in front of the store and saw Brown aggressively swinging the pole. Kelly requested backup and, armed with a Taser, got out of his car to confront Brown, who looked into Kelly's eyes and said, “You're going to have to end up killing me,” according to the state attorney's investigation. Then he walked away.
More officers arrived and several of them followed Brown, yelling at him, sometimes at gunpoint, to drop his wooden stick, but he ignored them. One officer fired his Taser. Brown tensed up for a moment but then kept walking.
Another officer fired a Taser, but it also had little effect on Brown. Then a third officer tried to tase Brown, and the darts struck his back. Brown became more agitated, tensed up and then ripped the darts out, according to court records.
Brown was eventually cut off by police vehicles and surrounded by officers. He began to move toward them saying, “You all are going to have to kill me.” They tried to tase him a fourth time, but he kept walking toward them.
Corporal Ludwin Vielman and Officer Marvin Gamarra shot Brown multiple times, and he died at the scene. Brown's mother later told the medical examiner that Brown had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and that he'd always walked around with a stick.
In the end, officers had tried to subdue him five times with Tasers, all were unsuccessful. The local prosecutor's office found the shooting justified. Brown's family recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and the officers involved.

Morad was shirtless in an alleyway, "bloody, irate and walking aimlessly," when Officer Matthew Harnandez found him, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's investigation. Morad walked toward Hernandez, swinging his fists wildly. The officer fired his Taser, when Morad was approximately 7-10 feet away, the ideal range for the device. "The Taser had little effect on Morad and he only paused momentarily." A witness identified as Kamiran D. told investigators it looked like only one of the darts made contact. Hernandez tried to arrest Morad, but Morad resisted and fought with Hernandez. The officer loaded a second Taser cartridge and fired it from a distance of about five feet. "Morad again showed little response to the Taser, but was slightly off balance." One witness, identified as David J., told investigators "Morad became more aggressive after the second tase." Hernandez drew his gun. Morad continued to disobey commands and was walking toward Hernandez with a raised fist when the officer opened fire, killing Morad. According to a witness, it looked like only one probe made contact with Morad's skin. Sanchez's family is suing the city of El Paso and officers involved. Filings in the suit show a factual dispute over whether the Taser darts connected or not.
